Today marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day that honours the Indigenous children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools. Toronto is hosting a variety of events to foster awarness and understanding of Indigenous history and culture. Here's a look at some of the ways you can participate in meaningful events across the city.
1. Day of Remembrance ceremony, hosted by Na-Me-Res
This is a free-to-attend community event, open to anyone seeking to reflect on, honour and better understand the diverse history of Canada’s First Nations, Inuit and Metis people. Hosted by Toronto’s non-profit Indigenous organization Na-Me-Res, the somber gathering will include a sunrise ceremony, sacred fire, traditional drumming and speeches that will honour the victims, survivors and the families impacted by residential schools in Canada as well as reignite calls for action on reconciliation.

2. Spirit Garden

A new Indigenous spirit garden opens today at Nathan Phillips Square to honour residential school survivors. This public garden features a large turtle sculpture made of limestone surrounded by elements that represent First Nation, Métis, and Inuit cultures.

3. Tipi Teaching/Design Workshop
Head over to Nathan Phillips Square to learn about the historical usage of Tipi’s while crafting and stylizing your own personal Tipi to take home.

When: September 30th, 2024 (1:30 pm - 3 pm)
4. John Keeshig Maya-waasige – Anishinaabe Teaching Lodge (Spirit Garden)
This cultural workshop focuses on the design and building of traditional teaching lodges. John Keeshig Maya-waasige is the Knowledge Keeper who is guiding the design of the Teaching Lodge within the Spirit Garden. This year John, will be inside the completed structure delivering the workshop.

5. Roots and Raven – Medicines Workshop – Sweetgrass Spray
Learn how to make beautiful sweetgrass medicine mist to add to your self-care routine. Roots and Raven grow and harvest many of their own organic herbs and medicines.

6. Indigenous Documentary Film Screening
Attend this free screening of WaaPaKe, a film by award-winning documentary film by director Dr Jules Arita Koostachin. This film moves beyond intergenerational trauma, with an invitation to unravel the tangled threads of silence and unite in collective freedom and power.
